Abstract

The conservation of architectural heritage involves a process of analyzing the property over time and aims to maintain its heritage value. Contemporary concepts of cultural significance, authenticity and integrity have acted as guiding elements of conservation actions on heritage. Within this context, it can be seen that some examples of modern architecture have presented problems that directly impact significance, integrity, authenticity and, consequently, the maintenance of their patrimonial value characteristics. It is often observed the existence of conflicts between the degradation conditions of the buildings and the maintenance of its patrimonial value, indicating difficulties regarding the proposition of conservative actions that can generate the least possible impact on such values. Despite the importance of the concept of integrity in the heritage conservation process, there is still no clear consensus on the exact meaning of its application or the establishment of specific parameters that can guide its assessment in practice. The objective of this work is to present the importance of the concept of integrity within the context of conservation and intervention actions on buildings of modern architecture and the main challenges inherent to their practical application in the conservation process. It is concluded that integrity must be operationalized as a central point in the process of conservation of modern heritage, and may point to the need for interventions and maintenance actions prior to the need for interventions of greater impact, where there is already an advanced degradation process.
