Roads, squares and atmospheres preferably the network of open spaces in Catete, Rio de Janeiro | RJ
Abstract
Catete was a prominent neighborhood at the beginning of the valorization of Rio de Janeiro southern zone. Its importance has been expanded by successive infrastructure works, thanks to the strategic location in the center-southern zone access. In its formation, the “Caminho da Praia Vermelha”, currently Rua do Catete street, is a fundamental structurant, reinforced by an attractive open spaces network. This work explores the relationships between urban attractiveness and Preference Atmospheres, analyzing the open spaces network around Rua do Catete street. Having Largo do Machado square as a central space, this network is conformed by the Palácio do Catete gardens, José de Alencar and São Salvador Squares, and Guinle and Flamengo’s Parks. The perspective adopted is based on urban atmospheres studies and on the methodology for identifying the “stages of landscape sedimentation” of attractive spaces (CARVALHO, 2009).
