The facade transition

Abstract

The facades that will be discussed in this article refer to the period from the late nineteenth century to the thirties of the last century, the transition from rural to urban, from agrarian to industrial, and from monarchy to republic. In observing the iconography of the time, the change occurs through architectural elements that alter the language and the typology of the constructions without, however, changing the rhythm since in the historical centers the urban inheritance of the narrow batches of the colonial period made it remain. As the facades close the urban space in the same way that the walls internally delimit the surroundings, they close it in a constant rhythm generating spaces where it is usual to perceive compositive effects as the repetition, the translation, the symmetry and the mirroring of elements. In the streets and avenues the changes of facades will give more for the frames and adornments than for the scale and proportion of them.
