Artistic and feminist utopias:
a city for women based on urban art in Belo Horizonte
Abstract
The article discusses the role of artistic and feminist utopias, considering the historical and contemporary conditions of their production, especially in the Global South, from the perspective of decolonial feminism. We argue that utopia is essentially aesthetic and can trigger changes in the reproduction of everyday life. Based on an analysis of works of urban art, we propose a critical view of space that articulates issues related to housing, the right to the city and inequalities, and that, understanding that space is socially produced, examines power relations and forms of exploitation. Supported by the need to deconstruct the spatial ideology that strengthens certain groups and classes, we argue that the coloniality of power is seen as a technology of domination that persists in contemporary times, with emphasis on the socio-spatial category of Améfrica. In this context of articulation between critical urban theory and decolonial feminism, we study the art of the urban place in Belo Horizonte to access, imagine and unveil feminist utopias in the city.
