Morphological impacts generated by urban infrastructure facilities: an overview at the electrical substations in Rio de Janeiro

Abstract

Fundamental to urban life, technical infrastructures such as those for sanitation and energy distribution are organized into territorial systems, serving cities and metropolises. On its local scale, however, its equipment, such as treatment stations and electrical substations, is usually inserted in an alien way. High and extensive walls, large areas with restricted access and consequent rupture of the urban fabric are factors that generate monotony, low walkability, feeling of insecurity. The analysis of electrical substations in Rio de Janeiro shows, at different scales, morphological impacts and points to the need for new design approaches based on contemporary dynamics and the apprehension of the theme in the field of Architecture and Urbanism.
