Women who make cities
an approach to the urban projects of the Bahian architect Arilda Cardoso, 1975-1982
Abstract
The history of architecture and urban planning in Salvador has been written from specific perspectives, including paradigmatic buildings or works by (male) architects. Several current studies have invested and focused on the visibility not only of specific works, but also on the contribution of female architects from Bahia to Salvador. A particular case is that of architect Arilda Cardoso, Coordinator of the “Green Areas and Open Spaces” Working Group of the Central Planning Department of the City Hall of the capital of Bahia between 1975 and 1982. The set of urban projects developed by her, in this context, shows us not only a concern for understanding the particularities and characteristics of the territory of Salvador, but, mainly, a sensitivity to understanding the socioeconomic problems of the place. This attitude highlights her understanding of urban planning as a political instrument for the benefit not only of the population itself, but of the capital of Bahia through the preservation of green areas.
