Between Flow and Ruin
The Four Worlds of Water and the Petrification of Water Supply Fountains in Rio de Janeiro
Abstract
This article analyzes the current condition of the historic public water fountains in downtown Rio de Janeiro through the concept of the four worlds of water, understanding their “petrification” as the result of a rupture between infrastructure, management, meaning, and experience. By problematizing heritage approaches centered on materiality, it proposes their reconfiguration as urban infrastructures capable of reintegrating water into everyday life.
