Abstract

This article analyzes the intersections between gender, housing, and women's participation in housing renovations in the context of social housing. It highlights women's role in home management, the organization of domestic space, and housing consolidation strategies. Based on case studies conducted in the ground-floor housing complexes Shopping Park and Pequis, both in Uberlândia, Brazil, the article identifies female protagonism as a central element in the adaptation and use of these spaces. The objective is to understand how gender dynamics influence decision-making processes and the adaptation of housing units, highlighting this protagonism in conducting renovations and expansions. This also reflects and contributes to SDGs 5, 10, and 11: gender equality, reduced inequalities, and sustainable cities and communities, respectively. This work is the result of the intersection of two postgraduate research projects (master's and doctoral) and is part of the institutional research project "RESILIENCE IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIAL TECHNOLOGY through digital APO and ATHIS instruments" (funded by PQ/CNPq). The methodological organization adopts a qualitative approach that combines elements of ethnographic and phenomenological analysis, with the administration of questionnaires to the communities studied. Indicating a greater representation in the interviews conducted, women are predominantly responsible for the residences, significantly outnumbering men in this role, which reinforces their role in home expansions to adapt to needs. Therefore, the importance of developing specific strategies for HIS renovations is highlighted, with in-depth studies aimed at supporting women who lead their residences.
