Abstract
It is after 1196 that Benedetto Antelami sculpted the south portal of the Baptistery of Parma. In the spyglass on
that the crown is represented has a complex legend, of strangely oriental origin. This is the sculptural representation of what was called “The Romance of Baalam and Josafat”, translated into Latin in the first decades of the 12th century.
