Readings from an urban palimpsest

A study about the center of Niterói

Abstract

Of great municipal and metropolitan importance, the Centro district in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, holds significant historical relevance, with its first urban plan dating back to 1820. Its urban and architectural trajectory has left traces throughout the city, forming layers in which it is possible to perceive the “city that contains many cities” (Pesavento, 2004). This paper presents the Centro of Niterói as an urban palimpsest, examining its layers and vestiges that make it appealing and foster the desire to experience this space, generating connections and memories anchored in the place. The study discusses conflicts in the preservation of its history and culture arising from the need for urban “growth”, observing the reduction of heritage protection instruments, the increase in building heights, and their impacts on urban ambiences and, consequently, on the relationship between individuals and the space.
