Abstract

Climate change has increased the number of meetings between international organizations to outline mitigation solutions. Many agreements are signed with long implementation deadlines, making it necessary to also consider short-term approaches, which contribute to the well-being and identification of more vulnerable regions and adaptation gaps. Considering the Sustainable Development Goals, this work highlights the importance of adopting practices to protect the building cultures of traditional and the assimilation of these community techniques by professionals who produce and design built spaces. To this end, it focuses on the valorization of traditional earth construction techniques in Maranhão, presenting practices and knowledge recorded during visits to the traditional communities of Canelatiua, in the municipality of Alcântara-MA, and Santa Maria de Guaxenduba, in the municipality of Icatu-MA. Their reports showed that traditional earth construction systems are an efficient solution to the region's microclimate, sustainable, with potential for historical-cultural representation, and producing an architecture that can be maintained and adapted by the people themselves. This flexibility and respect for the use of local materials and construction tradition is a response to the climate crisis, and is a short-term solution, contributing to resilience, quality of life, and the health of people, places, and homes.
